Damien Hirst Gallery: Powerstations

The Damien Hirst Gallery, Newport Street, is currently displaying 'Powerstations' by John Hoyland. The paintings are presented in a vast space that does justice to these brilliant expansive colour field works. These paintings by Hoyland, from 1964-82, in my opinion, put him up there with the very best. It's refreshing that there are no labels or explanations - the work is allowed to breathe, echo, vibrate and you contemplate over them within a perfect environment where the colour fields stimulate and challenge the observer. It's painting taken to the edge and beyond! I'll definately visit again very soon.
